When Widgets Go Down

February 4th, 2008 Posted in Articles

I’m sure a lot of you are like me, you check your site 1000 times a day to make sure everything is smooth and running. Well what do you do when something is not loading right? Probably panic!!!!! I have noticed a few days where I have come to my site and something has not been right and the pages are taking forever to load. 99% of the time I have found it to not be a server problem on my end, but most times a widget on the site loading from an affiliate or social network service like: Adtoll, Entrecard, Blogcatalog or Mybloglog.

The problem is that they are trying to load and are not being found so where ever the code is in your siteĀ it gets slowed down and will take longer to load the code that is after the “affiliate code”. I’m not sure what to do in terms of a fix, but if I see that it is happening I usually take the code out or hide it from the browser using the <!– code –> until I see that other sites are running fine again that have the same code or the affiliate site is back up and running.

This can be aggravating at times, but it’s a good idea to check on your blog once in a while to check from problems like these. So if your site is acting strange or stops loading at a certain spot go run and check the site that your widgets are from to see if they are having technical problems, are not. If so remove the code for a few hours till things are worked out on there end. To bad that we have to suffer if the other site is having a problem.

If anyone has a trick or tip to add to this let me know. I’m sure there has to be a way to check links and kill the code if the link is invalid.
