The AD space on your blog

March 28th, 2008 Posted in Making Money

Many people in the world have blogs, and this number grows daily. With over 100 million blogs out there today, we see a large variety of blogs out there some good, and some not so good. The part of the blog I want to talk about and analyze two parts of a blogs ad placement.

The Amount

Many new blogs make the mistake of throwing up a ton of advertisements. Personally I feel that you should start out with almost no ads or even ad free. The reason for this is as a blog you want to gain readers, no one will want to go to a blog that has tons of advertising on it that could detract from good content or even turn a user away from it.

You should then move your content up to an unobtrusive amount when you get a larger reader base. Personally there are so many unobtrusive ads that you can effectively monetize your blog without effecting your users experience at all.

Some examples of this are banner stripes, peal away ads, sponsored reviews, text links, RSS footer links, in post banners and text links (Ex. Kontera), and of course banner ads.

Personally I choose to have six banners (125×125) above the fold on my website with a few text links. I also have a 468×60 banner up there . I sell reviews but I prefer to focus on content. Honestly, if you have good content higher ad prices on lower ads a more loyal reader base can turn into more money than slapping tons of ads onto your website and hoping the few people that come to your website will click so you can make a buck or two from Google Adsense.

The plugin I recommend for this is OIOPublisher. Although I have just bought it, it has helped me sell my ad space through an automated system where I keep 100% of the profits. Granted it costs $37, but it’s a worthwhile purchase if you’re even remotely serious about blogging.

The location

The second factor you should consider that you should consider is where the ads are located. This ties directly into the amount. As stated before you want to have unobtrusive ads on your blogs.

The banner location if you have any is key. You shouldn’t have a huge banner across the top of your website, it will turn visitors away. Not to mention my all time pet peeve, fade in ads! If I go to a website with a fade in ad, chances are I won’t be coming back any time soon.

Make sure your banners don’t interfere with the content or take your users attention away from the content that is your blogs lifeblood. If you have flash banners make sure that they are visible but not so much that they drive your user away due to their effect (some are known as “seizure banners” due to their flashing effect).

Positioning your ads on your website will help you sell them. If you position them properly they will be unobtrusive but allow maximum exposure for your advertiser which will help you sell more ads.

Wrap-up

Please don’t be a blogger that just throws up ads and to many to boot. Conserve your ad space and your blog will be better off in the long run. After all who are you going to market to if you have no readers?

125×125 is so good because it is a simple square that can be sold individually to maximize revenue. It is also easy to make 125×125 unobtrusive so its no surprise it’s a favorite.
