Finding a domain name

February 25th, 2008 Posted in Articles

400652_dot_com.jpgSome of us know how hard it is to find the right domain name, one that is not already taken, short and catchy. A domain name is very important to your blog, it’s your branding. Sometimes this task can take hours. I have found that 90% of the domain names I search for are taken so it can be frustrating to find that name that fits the site idea you have in mind. This article should have been one of the series of my starting a making money blog, because it is an important element to any blog/site. I did touch a little on domain names in the first post of the series, but not really no how to find a domain name. Before I even start a new blog or site I always try to come up with the name to fit that idea.

The domain name usually is what I use to come up with the branding idea, logo and color elements of and site I do, but it all starts with the domain name. I have found a few sites that I use to start this process and make finding a good domain name quickly. These sites may also help you, but the process can still be frustrating with the amount of domain names already registered and you might have to try a few methods and go though a few names or related terms to get what you want.

The first thing to remember is that your domain idea is probably already taken. So what you need to do is determine other keywords that relate or are close to what your blog/site niche is going to be. The best tool for this is your Thesaurus, and the tool I use the most.

Here are some tools and sites to help you on your domain search.

Thesaurus -  I hope everyone knows what this is, if not. A thesaurus is an indexed compilation of words with similar, related, and opposite meanings. - Wikipedia

Makewords - A nice name generator that gives you different keyword themes to search under.

Instantdomainsearch - This site helps you find the right domain name—as fast as you can type.

Domaingenerator - Gives you a random domain name.

Webmaster-toolkit DNG - Domain Name Generator will produce a list of possible domain name ideas based on the word or phrase you input.

Domainsbot - A nice domain name search engine.

Lightsphere - Need a name for your Web 2.0 company? Try this handy name generator.

Domainsarefree - Another random domain generator.

123finder -  Domain generator and search engine.

Dislexicon - This one is fun. Generates new words out of prefixes, suffixes and root words.

Wordconstructor - Random word generator to generate new words or change existing ones.

Word Mixer -  Enter up to 5 words and it will mix-and-match your words and reassemble them to create unique words.

Rhymezone - Type in a word below to find its rhymes, synonyms, definitions, and more.

Justdropped - Find recently deleted domain names.

There are a few sites you can check out and see what works for you. All of theme offer something different and will make your domain searching a little more simple. If you have another site feel free to recommend it in the comment section.
