Finally upgraded to Wordpress 2.5

April 16th, 2008 Posted in Wordpress

Yesterday I upgraded all my blogs to Wordpress 2.5 and at first I was very displeased to find a few bugs. I was not sure what went wrong in the process, but for the most part I think I fixed the a few that I found with a little help from the Wordpress Forums. I do have to say besides to the small bugs, I really like the new upgrade, and like it more now that it is bug free (or at least I hope). There were a few that took a while to figure out, mainly the plugins and trying to find a quick solution to fix all the little bugs here an there. I think I spent about 2 hours on fixing most of it so far.

Visual Editor Problem:
The 1st problem I noticed and was hard to figure out was the Visual Editor was going haywire and double spacing everything I copy&pasted in to it, and the writing area was overlaping the sidebar. I went an did some searching on “Wordpress 2.5 visual editor errors” at google and came up with Visual Editor/TinyMCE problems I tried the steps and that did not seem to fix anything. About another hour of reading and trying things I decided to go through my plugins and see if one of them I had installed was causing the problems. Sure enough one of the add on editors was not working correctly with the new Wordpress editor, WP-Super-Edit. So i removed it and the problem was solved.

Image Upload Errors:
The next error I found that needed fixed was the new Image Uploader. Every time I tried to add a photo I got the error “Specified file failed upload test.” The problem was quickly fixed with a visit to the Wordpress Forums and I followed a few steps and was on my way to uploading images. You can find the Forum topic here. The steps I took were to do the patch from the Wordpress Trac and then add a bit of code to the .htaccess.

Htaccess Code:
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</IfModule>

Dashboard Widget Problems:
The Dashboard was not loading the widgets like news, stats, ect.. I fixed this by going an deactivating all the plugins and reactivating them and also editing the widgets with there edit button and this seemed to fix the problem there. Though it seems that my Hide Affiliate Links plugin is interfering with the Stats Dashboard widget. Not sure why that is happening.

Popularity Contest Plugin:
Other problems was the Popularity Contest widget that I found a quick solution for here and here that will at least work till the author releases a new version.

All an all its fixed:
Other than the last bug the upgrade seems to be working quite nicely and I am loving all the new features and looks of the admin panel. All the plugins I have installed except for the few mentioned above, all work well with the new upgrade, which if they don’t and there is a upgrade for that plugin you can do it all from your admin panel with out downloading and uploading the file. Just click update plugin. I do enjoy the new full screen posting and the spell check seems to work a lot better in the editor now. Happy Blogging.
