I know it’s been a round for a while and most everyone knows how to ping a blog, this is geared more towards new bloggers. Pinging or sending a ping is a way to let blog tracking services and search engines know you have updated your blog and they can index your new content. This in turn is a great way to get your blog noticed and build traffic for your blog. A ping in blog terms is an act of sending a XML-RPC signal to the ping servers that will generate a list of newly updated blogs, these sites include places like Technorati and Google Blog Search. You can select and ping each server manually if you like but there are other automated options and sites available to do this for you.
Why Ping?
Well traffic of chores. Pinging is a free way to promote your blog and show your site off to the world. Getting your blog out there and getting noticed and showing readers that your blog is updated is a good promotion for traffic. Pinging your site puts your site on many other major sites giving your a good source of backlinks to your latest topics that make it easy for people and search engines to find your information.
How to Ping your blog:
You could manually do all of the major services, but let’s face it that would take awhile to do. The best option is to use automated services that you can ping one time and it will tell the other services of your updates. There are tons of auto-pinging sites most are duplicated of the major ones so find a few that have the major sites you want to ping and use them. They are simple to use, and all you do is supply your Blog Name, URL and RSS link and they will do the rest of the work for you.

A warning:
Be careful not to spam. Only use these services whenever you publish new content to your blog, are your blog may get banned.
Using Blog Software to Ping:
I know Wordpress has this feature and I’m sure most other blogging software does also, but I can not be 100% sure of that, you will have to look in to your software to find out.
Wordpress offers a “Update Service” tool that allows you to add your XML-RPC Ping Services . So all you do is add your list and Wordpress will do the rest for you. Using the Update Service tool may have some slight delays so if you do not want the delays you can use the above option instead.
To access the “Update Service” tool you can go to your admin panel > options > writing and you will see the box at the bottom of the page to add your Ping Services.

Interesting post. I also have installed the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer which prevents your blog from accidentally ping-spamming all the servers.
I’m not so sure it’s safe to submit to every single pinger out there, as they may be rigged to submit to each other to some extent.
